First, the are fewer buyers during the winter, and the sellers know this, and are sometimes more willing to negotiate to make a deal. If someone lists their home during the winter (November-February) it is typically because there has been a big life change, such as job relocation. This can create a need to sell situation.
With less competition you will have time to plan your move and consider all the options before making a decision. This has been one of the hardest parts about the housing boom we have seen over the last several years. People are forced to make a decision about a house after only seeing it once, for 15 minutes. Usually during the winter you can tour a home, think it over, speak to your lender, and even go back and take a second look at the home, all before making your final decision.
Although this is not true for every home, this is typically what I have seen during the winter months. Give yourself the best advantage you can, consider buying during winter.
